Local Sports

The Texas A&M Aggies are the home team of the A&M athletics program, including football, but also soccer, basketball, softball, and various track & field sports, based in College Station, about two hours from Fort Hood.

The University of Texas - Austin Longhorns are the largest athletics program in the Austin area, with a full slate of sports.

Austin and Central Texas has no major league teams, but there are several minor league teams, including the Round Rock Express baseball team, Austin Vipers football team, Austin Outlaws women's football team, Texas Stars ice hockey team, Austin Toros basketball team, and Austin Aztex soccer club.

Race fans may be interested in the Formula 1 Racing Texas Grand Prix, a.k.a. Circuit of the Americas, in Austin, or the Central Texas Speedway, in Kyle, about 90 minutes south of Fort Hood.

Texas has many pro teams, if a hard-core major league fan is willing to travel. Major league teams include the Texas Rangers (Dallas-Fort Worth) and Houston Astro baseball teams, Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texan football teams, and San Antonio Spurs, San Antonio Silver Stars, Houston Rockets, and Dallas Mavericks, basketball teams.

For those who want a participatory sport, the CenTex Race Series in Killeen includes several different length or endurance runs. The CenTex series happens all around Central Texas, including Killeen. The Army Marathon at Fort Hood runs from Killeen to Temple, in March, and benefits local charities (Trivia - the original Marathon runner, Pheidippides, did it to deliver news of a great victory by the army of Athens over an invading Persian force - he had run 153 miles the two days before).

The Austin Marathon is held in February (registration opens months in advance) and includes a half-marathon and 5K.

Disc golf is fairly popular in Central Texas, and there are courses in Georgetown (41 minutes south) and Waco (about 60 minutes north).

Hunting: Texas Parks and Wildlife licenses and manages seasons for alligator, chachalaca, deer, javelina, pronghorn, rabbits (no closed season), squirrel, duck, dove, turkey, goose, rail, moorhen, pheasant, quail, sandhill crane, snipe, and woodcock. Furbearers include badger, beaver, civet cat (spotted skunk), fox, mink, muskrat, nutria, opossum, otter, raccoon, ring-tailed cat, and skunk.

Fishing: Texas has freshwater fishing mainly for bass, bullheads, catfish, crappie, sunfish, carp, minnow, gar, and suckers. There is less common fishing for eel, bowfin, pickerel, drum, paddlefish, trout, cichlid, shad, and walleye. Marine and shore fishing (in the Gulf, which is over 4 hours away; the nearest waypoint city is Galveston) includes whelk, crab, sea turtle, pinfish, pigfish, catfish, croaker, flounder, mullet, eel, drum, sea trout, amberjack, snook, and oyster.
