Ford Hood is home to a training center for tank destroyers. Fort Hood is known for its open spaces which allow for multiple testing and training opportunities. Fort Hood is located near Killeen Texas about halfway between Austin and Waco, Texas. Three sections make up Fort Hood and include the main cantonment, West Fort Hood, and North Fort Hood. The second runway at Fort Hood has been expanded for civilian use. There are over 25 elementary schools, 8 middle schools, 4 high schools, and 4 special campuses on Fort Hood. Students are provided free transportation if they live two or more miles from their assigned school. Special education students are provided with transportation regardless of their proximity to the school. The Killen Independent School District offers private, public, and parochial schools. Nearby universities include Central Texas College and Tarleton State University of which both offer graduate courses as well as undergraduate degrees. The Fort Hood Child Development Center offers full-day care for children from 6 weeks of age to 5 years old. Child care fees are based on total family income. All military personnel must be processed through the housing office upon arrival. Housing on Fort Hood is privatized and handled by the Lend Lease Actus organization. On-post housing is provided in over 6,000 units within 12 villages. If military personnel which to live on base, they must apply within 30 days of arrival. The waiting period is anywhere from one month to 2 years depending on the time of year. Contact the housing office for homes for sale or rent off-post as well. BAH rates for each individual vary by rank, and the housing office can help coordinate the properties that will best suite each soldier’s needs. Temporary lodging is provided by Fort Hood and reservations can be made in Building 111 or by calling 254-532-5157. The Poxon Guest House is the main temporary lodging facility with over 75 rooms available. Call 24 hours a day for reservations.
